Facts and Events
Jeff Thomas became blind from serving in WWI. Mary E. (aka "Beth") when she was a young girl about grade school age use to ride with him driving (in a Model-T Ford) and she would be his eyes telling him when to turn left or right, when to start slowing down, and how much more to slow down, when to stop, when to take off. Refer to audio excerpt of Mary E. in 1999 by Waresville Cemetery in Utopia, TX. sharing some of her childhood memories of her father, Jeff Thomas, and her childhood in general growing up on a piece of land near Utopia, TX. out in the country that she referred to as the "old girl scout camp". We were having a little picnic under a tree after having taken Dustin Lane Duran on an ancestral pilgrimage for him when he was eight months old. Attending the ancestral pilgrimage and picnic was Mary E., her great-grandson, Dustin, her daughter, Barbara Carole, and dear friend of the family's, Josie Rodriquez, whom we referred to and thought of with great affection, "Mama's favorite daughter, Josiella (as in Cinderella, the good sister...the rest of us Mary Louise, Jessie Alice, Woodette, and I being the bad daughters who could do nothing right, only Josie could do no wrong in Mama's eyes...HA! HA!)". References
