Parentage of Jean Stuart

Some sources claim that Jane Stuart (sometimes referred to as "Jean Boyd Stuart", (unsubstantiated)) was the daughter of Archibald Stuart and Janet Brown, but this appears to be in error for the following reasons:

1. Archibald Stuart named a daughter Eleanor in his will, but did not name a daughter Jane or Jean.

2. Archibald Stuart also did not name Jane Stuart's brother, John in his will:

Jane Stuart, wife of James Craig is listed in the following Augusta County record in Chalkley's as being the sister of John Craig that married Frances Burnside:

  • Vol. 2 - Baxter vs. Stuart's executors--O. S. 53; N. S. 18--Bill, 18th June, 1805. Orators are, viz: John Baxter and Margaret, his wife, who was daughter of John Stuart, whose will is recorded in Augusta. The widow Frances married Joseph Moore. Margaret was also entitled under the will of John Burnsides and of Martha Burnsides (father and mother of Frances). The wife of James Craig was sister of John Stuart. Frances and John had a daughter Polly, who married Peachy Harrison. Answer sworn to by Frances Moore in Shenandoah County 14th November, 1805. Margaret had a brother Samuel (born after his father's death).

3. John Stewart, brother of Jane has been tentatively identified as a son of John Stewart of Middle River and the Borden Tract, who named a son John AND a daughter Jean in his will, both of their approximate birthdates seem to fit with the birthdate ranges listed in James Stewart's will. This appears to be a good fit.

  • Page 229.--19th November, 1816. Jean Craig's will--To daughter, Mary Magill; daughters, Elizabeth and Jane; to daughter, Nancy Hamilton; son, Robert Craig; to daughter, Sarah Hamilton; son, Elijah Craig. Executors, son Elijah Craig and James Craig. Teste: James Stewart, James Craig, Sr.; Wm. Craig. Proved, 27th January, 1817. Executors qualify.

Jane Stewart was named in her father's will as being "under 25 and unmarried" in 1771, which would have made her birthdate as bet. 1746-1750.
