Identity

Jane Taffe is sometimes called "Jane Grimes" by some researchers who are unaware that she was NOT the daughter of Nancy Cunningham with her husband, Mark Grimes. Jane was the daughter of Nancy Cunningham with her former [husband?] James Taffee, who died in November 1782, some eight months before the birth of his daughter, Jane. It is unlikely that James Taffee ever knew that he had fathered a child with Nancy Cunningham. [Note: it is unknown by this researcher if James Taffee and Nancy Cunningham were actually married [Nancy was only 16 at the time and James Taffee would have been some 37 years her elder], but if they were, the record would likely be in Hampshire County, Virginia].

This is confirmed in two sources; 1) the Last Will of Robert Cunningham, grandfather of Jane, and 2) the marriage record of Jane and her husband, Aaron Vanscoy.

1) - The will of Robert Cunningham includes the following:
Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Nancy the old _____ place also the Skiliock (?) Place in Randolph County in Tigers Valley also my Doly Place which I give to her and her heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath to Nancys oldest daughter born before (?) marriage the Mill having giving the Hanibelton Track containing four hundred and forty five acres the same more or less which I give to her & her heirs forever.
2) - Marriage Record in Randolph County, [W] Virginia:
1799 - Aaron Vanscoy m. Gean Taffe, dau. of Nancy Grimes, performed by Robert Maxwell. [Source: Bosworth, Albert S. A history of Randolph County, West Virginia, from its earliest exploration and settlement to the present time. (Elkins, West Virginia: A.S. Bosworth, 1916, pg. 62]
