Jane Haydon was baptised on 24th April 1823 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of Elizabeth Haydon (whose maiden name was also Haydon) and her husband William Haydon, a miller. Jane's mother appears to have died in 1830. It has yet to be established what became of Jane's father.

By 1841 Jane was living with her older sister Emma, who had married a William Rush. They lived at Fishpool Street in St Albans, a few miles south of Luton, and Jane worked as a servant. The 1851 census finds Jane living in Hitchin, a few miles east of Luton, with an aunt Sophia Winch (formerly Haydon), as well as her niece Ann Rush with whom she had been living in St Albans ten years earlier. Again, Jane was working as a servant.

By 1861, Jane had returned to her native Luton and was working as a bonnet sewer in the town's hat-making industry. She was boarding with a family on Burr Street in the town.

In the 1871 census Jane was again living with her sister Emma, who had remarried following William Rush's death to a Henry Leslie, but was again a widow following Henry Leslie's death. They were living at 57 New Town Street in Luton and Jane was working as a hat sewer.

In 1876, aged about 53, Jane married a widower called Joseph Kempson. They were married for just over four years until Jane's death on 11th October 1880, aged 57. Joseph survived her by less than a month.
