Jane Hamblin was born in 1838 at Hampton in Middlesex, daughter of Jemima Hamblin, formerly Heath, and her husband William Hamblin, a waiter. When Jane was only a year or two old, her father died. The 1841 and 1851 censuses find Jane living with her mother and siblings on New Street in Hampton, with her mother working as a wood merchant in 1841 and a charwoman in 1851 - when she was also described as a pauper.
In 1860 Jane had a son, James Henry, whose birth was registered between April and June. Soon afterwards, in September 1860, banns of marriage were read for Jane and a young man called Felix Festus Timothy. The banns were read in the parish of St Saviour's in Southwark, but for whatever reason Jane and Felix did not marry that year. However, Felix was named as the father of young James Henry (or Harry James) on his baptism record in 1873. The 1861 census finds Jane living with her son and mother at New Street in Hampton and working as a servant.
Jane and Felix eventually married on 29th March 1863 at Barnes in Surrey. Another eight children followed between 1863 and 1882.
Felix worked as a commercial traveller, and appears to have been regularly away from home. In the late 1860s the whole family briefly moved to Canada, with one of their daughters being born in Peterborough County, Ontario in 1869. However, by 1871 they had returned to England, and appear in the census in West Ham, east of London.
In 1881 Jane and the children were living in the Peckham area south of London, although Felix was away from home on census night. By 1891 they were living at South Norwood in Croydon, and again, Felix was away from home on census night.
Jane died on 29th November 1900 at Regency Square in Brighton, right on the seafront. She was 62 years old. A newspaper announcement of her death described her as "the dearly beloved wife of Felix F. Timothy". Felix survived her by just over eight years.
