Jane Couldrey was baptised on 28th March 1841 at East Lockinge in Berkshire, daughter of Ann Couldrey, formerly Shepherd, and her husband Richard Couldrey. The 1841 census finds baby Jane and her mother living with her mother's family in East Lockinge. By 1851 Jane was living with her parents and siblings in the neighbouring village of Ardington.
On 25th August 1860, aged 19, Jane married a carpenter and carter named Enoch Kempson at Kingsbury in Middlesex, over fifty miles east of Ardington. Jane and Enoch appear in the 1861 census living on Kenton Lane in Kingsbury. By 1871 they had moved within the parish to The Hyde area, living at Hyde Alley. Jane was working as a laundress by this time. Jane and Enoch do not appear to have had any children.
Some time between 1871 and 1876 Jane and Enoch appear to have separated, as Enoch married again (probably bigamously given how rare divorce was at the time) in 1876. Jane does not appear to have married again, but it would appear she settled down with a George James Harris to whom she claimed to be married, calling herself Jane Harris.[11]
The 1881 census finds Jane and George living at 13 Great James Street in the Lisson Grove area of Marylebone in London. George's young niece Rosa Weatherdon was living with them. Ten years later Jane and George had moved a short distance to 44 Hereford Street, where they lived in two rooms.
Jane appears to have died on 22nd December 1895 at the St Marylebone Infirmary (which despite the name was actually in Kensington). She was 54 years old. George James Harris married the following year, claiming to be a widower.

- ↑ No plausible death for a Jane Kempson (or variant spellings) has been found between the 1871 census, in which Jane and Enoch were living together, and 1876, when Enoch married again. The Jane Harris who appears in the 1881 and 1891 censuses gave her place of birth as Ardington, as this Jane had done whilst living with Enoch. No trace of a marriage for George James Harris and a Jane from Ardington has been found. It is also worth noting that in the 1871 census George James Harris had been living at The Burroughs in Hendon, less than a mile from The Hyde in Kingsbury where Jane was living with Enoch. As with Jane and Enoch's marriage, there is no evidence of Jane and George having any children together.
