Stephen van Cortlandt to Sir Edmund Andros.... The French and Indians since your departure have again destroyed some people to the eastward of Boston, have burned Senectady, and taken twenty-eight prisoners. A party of Indians and young men followed the French, overtook them, killed some and took others. The French Indians have lately killed over ten people at Conestagione, which has alarmed the whole country and driven people from their plantations. Most of the Albany women are at New York. Leisler has pressed Depeyster's brigantine and a Bermudian ship, which are to accompany the expedition to Quebec ; and the men at Albany, with others from the other Colonies and 1500 Maquas, are to attack Canada by land.

[2] Thus in the original. | for the term of two following years, beginning on the 8th of November next, for the sum of three hundred guilders in good strung seawan to be paid punctually each year. It is further stipulated that the lessor shall deliver the said house, lot and garden in good condition, window, roof and floor tight, likewise the fence of the garden in good repair, on condition that the lesee shall be holden to deliver the same up again at the end of the lease in like condition. Furthermore, the lessee shall have the right during the lease to have some one else use the said house, lot and garden, on condition that he, the lessee, be responsible for the rent of the same. Finally, in case any repairs on the house be required or anything be made during the lease, the same shall be done with the knowledge of the lessor, who shall bear half the expense thereof. For the faithful performance of which the parties hereto mutually [177] bind their respective persons and estates, nothing excepted, subject to all courts and judges. Done in the colony of Rensselaerswyck, dated as above. | Hendrick Roer Johannsz Clute Jure Jaen Tunden This mark II was made by Hendrick Jansz Looman, aforenamed | D. V. Schelluyne, Not. Pub. 1661 ----- Johannes Clute sublets the house mentioned above to Jan Mangelsen | By the virtue of the foregoing contract Jan Knoet leases the abovementioned house and lot and Jan Mangelsz hires the same of him, for which Jan Mangelsz shall pay to Jan Knoet the aforesaid stipulated rent, every quarter year a just fourth part, punctually each time, and in addition within the term of said lease five beavers or the value thereof; for the faithful performance of which and of the terms of the above lease the parties hereto mutually bind their respective persons and estates, nothing excepted, to the authority of all courts and judges. Don in the colony of Rensselaerswyck, on the date above written. | Johannsz Clute Jan Mangelsz [1] In my presence, D. V. Schelluyne, Not. Pub. 1661 _____ [1] He married a daughter of Pieter Adriaensen Soogemackelyck, by whom he had several children who are entered in the records of the Reformed Dutch churches of Albany and New York under the name of Roll, variously spelled Rol, Rall, Ral, and Raal. March 4, 1681/2, Jan Mangelsen received from the Indians a gift of land at Canastagione, now Niskayuna, for which he sought to obtain a patent in 1703. He died before September 4, 1705, when his son Mangel Jansen Roll and wife Antie sold to Ryer Schermerhoorn three morgens of land at Niskayuna which Jan Mangelsen had obtained from Claes Jansen van Bockhoven, under a contract of sale of January 14, 1672/3, together with certain rights in land to the rear thereof which said Claes Jansen purchased from the Indians on March 4, 1681/2, and in which Jan Mangelsen had a share. On April 2, 1713, the heirs of Jan Mangelsen presented to the governor and council a petition for a patent for the land at Niskayuna, but apparently no action was taken. | Jan Mongeroll was born in Holland and was at one time Burgomaster of his native city, Utrecht." It is unlikely that Jan was a burgomaster, due to his age. Therefore, the burgomaster may have been Jan's father or grandfather."
Source: The Roll Family Windmill <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~windmill/html/mangname.html> | If either Mangel Roll or his father were burgomaster in Utrecht, the Netherlands, as has been suggested, he most certainly would have been from the upper class, and thus had a fixed surname.
The following list of the burgomasters in Utrecht seems to disprove the burgomaster suggestion:

Collins, Printers, 1836, pages 687-693. | Neskayuna, whose name is derived from the Indian appellation, Con-nes-ti-gu-ne, "a field covered with corn," is a very small town taken from Watervliet, Albany county, 7 March, 1809; centrally distant from Albany, N. W. 12; and from Schenectady S. E. 6 miles. This name was formerly borne by an extensive tract, on both sides of the Mohawk, granted partly by the Nestigione, and partly by the Connestigione patent, and which together, embraced portions of Clifton Park and of Half Moon, towns, of Saratoga County, and Watervliet, of Albany County. Hence the name Neskayuna, still in use among the descendants of the primitive Dutch settlers, it also applied to a tract in Watervliet, at which is the Shaker settlement. The surface is hilly along the river, and soil productive, but the greater portion of the town is of light sand, of very indifferent quality. There is a hamlet near the river, bearing the name of the town, where is a church, and some few dwellings.

This name, and Connestigione, another old Patent, granted in 1697, to Peter Hendrix De Haas, are the origin of Niskayuna, the name of a Township, and of an extensive tract on both sides of the Mohawk, still in use among the old fashioned Dutch and their descendants. The latter was S. of the Cahoos Falls, and probably within the present township of Watervliet.
