He immigrated from Germany to Piqua Ohio, where his mother's brother, Jan Laug was living. He married his uncle's step-daughter. In 1870 they were living next door to his uncle. In 1870-1880 he was a cigar manufacturer, as was his uncle. In 1880 his mother-in-law was living with them, and died in his home in 1891. He was the executor of her will.
