    Revolutionary War:

    On Jan 8, 1777 at the age of 31 years James enlisted in the 8th Virginia Reg't and fought in the Revolutionary War under Capt. David Stephenson's Co., commanded by Abraham Bowman. His pay was 6 1/3 dollars per month. Sept. 1777 his pay increased to 6 2/3 dollars. April and May of 1778 he was at Valley Forge. June 1778 through Aug. 1778 he was attached to the 4th, 8th and 12th. Virginia Reg't. under Capt. William Croghan's Co. Commanded by Col. James Wood. July 1778 through Nov. 1778 he was at Camp White Plains under Col. John Nevill. In Dec. 1778 through March 1778 he was camped near Meddlebrock and attached to the 4th Virginia Reg't. commanded by Col. John Nevill. From April 15, 1779 he was on furlough. July 1779 he was camped at Ransfrough or (Pembrough?). Oct 1779 he was camped at Haverstraw. May of 1779, the 3rd and 4th Reg'ts. were incorporated and designated the 3rd and 4th. Virginia Regi't under Captain-Lieut. Leonard Cooper's Co. commanded by Col. John Nevill until Nov. 1779 when he was camped near Morristown when he was discharged from the Army.
