"James Williams, Esq., 'Captain of one of his Majesty's Independent Companies of New York,' by his will dated 11 Apr. 1719, proved 10 May 1723, left his entire estate to his wife Elizabeth, excepting 'I leave to my daughter Isabella, wife of John Outman, 20 shillings, in bar of all claim to my estate as sole heir and daughter.' We do not know why Captain Williams virtually disinherited his daughter, at least during his wife's lifetime, but it is possible that he disapproved her husband."
