James White's origins are unclear. He claimed to have been born around 1811 at Clipstone, in the hamlet of Eggington and parish of Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire. He also gave his father's name as John White. He seems to have married and had three children, but he does not have a wife living with him in the 1841 census and in 1851 he was explicitly recorded as being a widower. He did have two children living with him in the 1841 census, when he was working as an agricultural labourer and living in Eggington.
In 1858 he married again, to a widow called Celia Kempson, formerly Jones. The 1861 and 1871 censuses each find James living with Celia in Eggington. Celia's two youngest daughters were living with them in 1861. Celia died in 1873.
The 1881 census finds James living alone in Eggington. In 1891 he was living with his daughter Elizabeth, who had never married. James died shortly after the 1891 census.
