James Webster's origins are not known. If the age quoted when he died was correct, then he was born around 1776.

His first confirmed sighting is on 12th October 1808, when he married a widow called Abigail Willoughby, formerly Hornet, at St Peter's church in St Albans, Hertfordshire. James and Abigail appear to have lived at London Colney, which at that time straddled the parishes of St Albans St Peter, Shenley and Ridge. They had a daughter, Abigail, baptised at Shenley in 1809, whose baptism describes James as a labourer.

James died in 1815, being buried at Shenley on 8th February 1815. He was said to be 38 years old. Abigail survived him by 35 years and remarried in 1817.
