James Thomson, aged 70 was still living in Stanley in the 1881 Census, with his wife, son Edward and daughter Grace. No entry found for him in the 1891C for Stanley. No entry was found for him in the General death index for Redgorton-Auchtergavin area and of that for Mary McIntyre throughout Scotland from 1881-1910. The OPR's for Auchtergavin entry was found: "John Thomson in Stanley, on February 10th 1811 had a child by his wife Janet Strachan baptised named James." The marriage records for Auchtergaven are blank from 1773-1823. No other births to this couple were found between 1806 and 1816 in Auchtergaven and Redgorton. No entry was found for John and Janet in the 1841 Census, so it was thought probable that they had died.

This info. is all from the Scots Ancestry Research Society in 1971. and I haven't bothered getting copies of the original records, which I now know I should have done, as their efforts are not thought of very highly by the professional genealogists I know in Christchurch. So there could be other sources to fill in gaps, as you found with George.
