James Sutherland (b. 1757, d. 1823)
James Sutherland149 was born 1757 in County Sutherland, Scotland, and died 1823 in Russell Co., VA Trammel, VA. He came to Russell in 1807 after living inBoteourt and Bedford Counties.Another family member copied (5/19/49) the following for the children of S. Douglas Sutherland. Some of the information conflicts.
James Sutherland came to America from Scotland, date unknown, and probably lived in Caswell County, NC, then moved to Bedford County about 1783. Later lived in Botetourt Co, VA and moved to Russell County about the year 1801. He married Sarah Buchanan of Bedford County, and had three children, Henry, Daniel, and Agnes. The daughter married Mount LaFouce, a Frenchman.
Henry Sutherland, married Agnes LaForce (Agnes was his sister, not his wife) and one of his sons was named Henry Sutherland, our grandfather. He married Margared Counts, daughter of Ezekiel Counts and Elizabeth (Amburgy) Counts. Ezekiel Counts was son of John Counts and Margaret (Kelly) counts.
Daniel Sutherland, son of James the first, married Phoebe Fuller, daughter of Jessee, Fuller and Elizabeth (Lee) Fuller. One of Daniel's sons was named James, our grandfather on mother's side. James married Nancy, a daughter of John Counts and Phoebe (McReyonlds) Counts. John Counts was a son of the John Counts mentioned above.
Grandfather Henry Sutherland was born in Russell County in 1822, and moved to Dickinson county between 1850 and 1860, and raised a number of children, including our father, Stephen A. Douglas Sutherland, who was born in 1860. Our mother, Rebecca Sutherland was born in Sept. 1860. Father died in Aug. 1912.
(As reported by Brady Sutherland, Oct. 3, 1960)
"Known as "Jamie the Scotsman" came to the New World from County Sutherland, Scotland, sometime around the year 1800. He probably settled in Rockbridge County, VA, then lived in Bedford County and Botetourt County, VA and moved to Russell County in 1807, having purchased 40 acres of land on Clinch River where the town of Carbo now stands. His sons Henry and Daniel lived around Carbo, and on Dumps Creek, where they owned farms. Around 1846 Henry, Jr. moved across Sandy Ridge and settled on Long Ridge in what is now Dickenson County. I have been told he bought several thousand acres of land at 5 cents an acre, coal, timber and all. His family consisted of Zachariah, Ezekiel (father of Parkis), J.M.R. Sutherland, Nappleon Bonapart, Douglas (Elieu's father), and Garland Bruce, who died in Philippines, while in the army. Also daughters Elizabeth Powers, Sylvia Owens and Martha Owens (Uncle Dow's wife).
Uncle Ezikiel was a very fine and intelligent man. With only two months schooling, he made himself into a surveyor, the same as a civil engineer, and surveyed a good portion of Dickenson County. It took quite a mathematician to handle a job such as he had. After he died, Uncle Walter did some surveying with his equipment.
At one time Uncle Ezekiel ran for public office, either County Clerk or Treasurer, and Holiday Sutherland told me one time that he was actually elected but the democrats counted him out of it. He raised a wonderful family, a fine looking bunch and each with a lot of personality.
The Kisers, who are related to the Sutherlands, started with Captain Andrew Kiser, who came to this country from Germany about the year 1750 or 1755. He was, no doubt, a hired soldier. He settled in Page County, Shenandoah Valley, and some of his descendants spell their names Keyser, for instance the Keyser's of Roanoke, VA. One of Andrew's sons, Joseph Kiser, moved to Russell County about 1800, and settled at the old Kiser homestead.
Owned land on Keith's Creek in Bedford Co., VA in 1781.2/24/1783 secured a deed for 700 acres on Beaverdam Creek Bedford Co., VA.
