James Newton Smalling, born July 24, 1844 in Alabama, came to Oklahoma Indian territory around 1884 from Texas. He owned a farm in Ardmore and Healdton before settling in Harmon County in 1901. He married Alcy Susan West--they had nine children. He is buried in Russell Cemetery, Russell, Oklahoma

James was born on July 4, 1844 in Alabama to Wade Hampton Smalling. Wade's family appears on the 1860 Caldwell Parish, LA census. James fought in the Civil War and appears on the 1880 Cooke Co, Texas census. He was in the Healdton (sic?), Oklahoma area in the late 1890's and moved west to Harmon Co., Oklahoma in the fall of 1900 (his granddaughter, Etta Beck, my grandmother, was in the wagon). He appears in the 1920 Harmon Co. census. Family records say that he died in Harmon Co. on June 13, 1922. There is an Oklahoma death record of the right time and place but under the name "William Smalling". James' wife was Elsa Susan West (sometimes spelled Alcie), who was born on December 22, 1844, possibly in Mississippi and died in Harmon Co. on August 9, 1923. Elsa's parents were Joseph and Sarah J. Joseph's father may have been Grancer. I have a Newton Co., Mississippi 1850 census listing that might be Joe and Sarah West and daughter "Susannah" who is the right age.
