James H. Smalling, born 1855, 1880 Census research: James Hervey Smalling and Harriet Arrants had five children. Page 522 of a book, photo-copy sent to me from Bob Shell. I do not know name of book. Occupation: James Hervey Smalling was a brick layer, and bridge and trestle foreman on Cranberry Railroad which hauled iron ore to a Johnson City furnace. He constructed trestles on WIllis Boone 

Railroad, near Bristol and constructed the original Horseshoe Dam for Watauga Valley Lumber Company 1887-1901.
