Family correspondence, and dna matches between a descendant of Person:David Runciman (4) and James' "cousin" William (both of whom ended up in Michigan), would indicate that James may be the grandson of Person:David_Runciman_(8)

With the discovery (Feb 2012) of William Runciman, baker in London with sons James and William of the right ages to be the Michigan James and William, the "cousin" theory is hereby put on hold, and the "brothers" one brought back into favour, along with bringing the Lauder baker family into Lineage 1a. This London connection certainly fits the family stories about the William who went to London, with children brought up in Wanton Walls with their cousins.

A direct male line descendant of James is still required for the RUNCIMAN Surname DNA Project

  12. index shows James as married, 73, farmer b Scotland, parents unknown, recorded 30 May 1873
  13. only his dth record has Scotland as p.o.b., all census data has b England
  14. as although family lore has James & Isabella, together with a brother William (mar. Mary BROWN), emigrating together from Glasgow in Jun 1850 I have found that US census records show children born in NY and MI, from 1833, and the family of James appears in the Washtenaw Co. census data from 1840 to 1870 at least
