Biography of James Robinson

James Robinson, son of Stephen Robinson, Sr., and Elizabeth (Holland)Robinson, was born 26 January 1780 in Cumberland County, Virginia, and died 16 October 1853 in Wilson County, Tennessee^[1]. James Robinson married Elizabeth Fite, daughter of Leonard Fite and Margaret (Crosse) Fite about 1804, probably in Smith or Wilson County, Tennessee. Elizabeth was born about 1783 in New Jersey according to the 1850 Wilson County census^[1]. John Broddie states that she was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina^[1], however depositions by her father and uncle in Revolution records state they moved to Pennsylvania in 1784, to North Carolina in 1787 and and on to Smith County, Tennessee about 1797 (see Leonard Fite's page). She died in 1864.

James is listed in his father, Stephen Robinson's, will which was probated in 1835 in Smith County, Tennessee^[9]:

I also give and bequeath to my son James Robinson a Negro man named Sims which he has now in his possession; also the Negro girl Rheny which I have given and bequeathed to my beloved wife Betty Robinson during her natural life, after her death, Stephen Robinson's Will.

On 25 Mar 1851, James Robinson gave to his daughters, Sally Jennings, wife of Wilie Jennings and his daughter Martha Ann, wife of George Martin and their children the following slaves, to wit, Carily and Elijah. Recorded in Wilson County Trust Deed Book LL, pp28-29^[2].

Death of James Robinson

James Robinson died 21 Nov 1853 and his will, dated 14 Feb 1853, was entered for probate and recorded 20 Dec 1853 during the December Court Term of 1853 in Wilson County, Tennessee in Book 1850-1858, page 63^[8]. His will names his wife, Elizabeth, all of his children and also the bequest of ten slaves. His estate inventory sale was entered in the August Term 1854, page 119-120, showing an extensive sales of inventory items that were sold. His son, Stephen Robinson and son-in-law, James Turner were administrators.

James and Elizabeth had at least twelve children who are listed in his will: daughters; Elizabeth Truett, Sarah Jennings, Catherine Turner, Peggy Anderson's heirs, Nancy Jennings, Matilda Pritchett, Martha A Martin, and sons; Edward Robinson, Stephen Robinson, Moses Robinson, John Robinson, and William F Robinson. James and Elizabeth are are reported to be buried at Talley Graveyard at Roundtop near Alexandria in Wilson County, Tennessee, according to Historical Southern Families Vol XXII^[1].
