"James (Pierpont), New Haven, s. of John of Roxbury, ord. 2 July 1685, m. 27 Oct. 1691, Abigail, d. of John Davenport sec. wh. d. within four mos. and his sec. w. 1694, was Sarah, d. of Rev. Joseph Haynes, and by her he had only Abigail; his third w. 1698, was Mary, d. of Rev. Samuel Hooker. Whether he was promin. as divine, or what issue he had by this last, I am not able to discover (yet Edward C. Herrick, Esq. Libr. can tell), but his wonderful story of the apparition of the ship in the sky, at New Haven, many yrs. bef. he was b. that worthi. adorns the Magnalia, Book I. ch. 6, § 6, is evidence of his felicity of fancy. It may be compar. with the contempo. acco. of the prodigy in Winthrop II. 328. He d. 22 Nov. 1714.
