JAMES MILROY was born in 1805 at Stoneykirk, Wigtonshire, Scotland. He was the next to youngest son in a family of at least six children.
When he was 23 he married MARY MCMURRAY, daughter of ANDREW MCMURRAY and MARGARET MARTIN, on 28 Oct 1828 at Kirkmaiden by Drunmore, Wigtonshire, Scotland.S7 It was a late marriage for Mary. She was 29, six years older than James. The family moved north from Wigtownshire to Glasgow sometime around 1833. Daughter Margaret was born in Wigtownshire in 1832, daugther Mary in Glasgow in 1834.
It is not known what James did to support the family before moving to Glasgow, but he held a succession of different jobs over the years he was there. He was a Porter in 1834. He was a Broker in 1841. He was a Tailor Master Employing 1 Man in 1851. He was a Club Agent at a Beneph(icence) Society in 1861. He was a Shop Watchman in 1871. He was a Night Watchman in 1881.
His 35 year old daughter Mary became widowed in 1869. A month later James wife Mary died. James took his daughter Mary and her four children in with him. James was 64. Mary had some turbulence in her life. Her relationship with another man after her husband's death brought three more children into the household. Two of her children died young. In the end James spent his declining years with five growing children.S4
He died of bronchitis, valvular disease of the heart, dropsy, on 15 May 1888 at 168 Holm Street, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was 83 years old.
