Notes from Marsha Baker "Occupation: Farmer, rancher; James traveled across the plains in covered wagons with his family from Winnebago Co, IL at the age of 8 (1854) and settled in Contra Costa County, CA 6 months later. He and his parents resided there until 1862 when they moved to near Salem, Marion Co., OR where his father bought a 160 acre farm. James is listed, individually, in the August 30, 1870 Census as an independent farmer, with property worth $2000. Julia's parents were born in Missouri and she married James on her 14th birthday. James and Julia apparently remained in Yolo Co after their marriage in Noveber 180 as he obtained 160 acres, located in the Plainfield district of Yolo County, CA on a patent grant by the US govt dated Feb 1, 1872. This land was auctioned off in Sept 1873, due to $1150 in mortgage debts, and was later purchased by his older brother, Henry, for $2100 on Mar 9 1874. James and Julia then moved to Peachland, Mendocino Co, CA where he obtained another 160 acres from a land grant. James farmed this property and also worked for the Joe Hodgekiss ranch on the Russian River, until his death at age 50 from appendicitis. Julia, age 43 and widow with 7 children at home, is listed in the Anderson Township, Mendocino Co, CA 1900 Census.
