Book on Thomas Bays Nelson has that he came from Scotland or Northern Ireland, he settled in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. They later (abt. 1790) moved to Turkeyfoot Twp., Somerset Co., PA, near Ft. Hill. Here he purchased a farm which he cultivated and improved, realizing therefrom a comfortable livlihood for his family. The 1798 tax list for Turkeyfoot township listed James McMillin, Sr. as a weaver. He was also a tanner by trade, and started tanning hides, using vats made from chestnut tree logs. James served in the Revolutionary war under Capt. William Allen, Ninth Battalion, Lancaster County Militia. His son, John, also served in the Revolutionary War. There is a stone monument in the Park at Confluence, Pa. which honors them. (The pioneer name for Confluence was Turkeyfoot.)
