Facts and Events
Records in Kentucky
James Parks Mayfield is named in the 1795 will of his grandfather, Isaac Mayfield, who died in Lincoln County, KY.
Researcher Phil Norfleet in his Biographical Sketch of Isaac Mayfield (d. 1795) of VA, SC and KY states that "Susannah Mayfield was born about 1760. She apparently had an illegitimate child (James Parks Mayfield) by a man named James Parks. The probable father, James Parks, later moved to Monroe County, Indiana; he was a neighbor of Leroy Mayfield and a Deacon of the Vernal Baptist Church".

117.James Parks6 Mayfield (Susannah5, Isaac4, Isaac3, Robert2, Robert1) was born Abt. 1785, and died 20 October 1856 in Garrard County KY.He married Martha (Patsey) Hutcherson 28 January 1807 in Garrard County KY.She was born Abt. 1787, and died 15 October 1859 in Garrard County KY. Notes for James Parks Mayfield: EMAIL FROM CLARABELL DAVIS On 23 May 2000, I received an email from Clarabell Davis of Jacksonville, Florida concerning both Jean Baxter and James Mayfield of Garrard County: Clarabell found a Garrad Co., Ky. marriage record, dated 28 Jan 1807, where a bond was given by a certain James Mayfield to marry Patsy Hutcherson. The license was also signed by James Mayfield. She wondered if this James Mayfield could be James Parks Mayfield, grandson of Isaac and Jean Baxter Mayfield? If so it would be reasonable that Jean Baxter might be buried on the old HutchersonPlace. IDENTITY OF JAMES MAYFIELD OF GARRARD COUNTY KY In my opinion, the James Mayfield of Garrard County KY is indeed the same James Parks Mayfield, illegimate son of Susanna Mayfield, mentioned in the will of Isaac Mayfield (d. 1795).This James lived in Garrard for many years; he died in during the time period (1852-1862) when vital statistics were being kept by the Kentucky counties. James Mayfield died on 20 October 1856 at the age of 71; the cause of death as stated in the Garrard County vital records was "shot himself with a gun!"Whether this death was accidental or a suicide is unknown to me.I'm sure there would have been a county corner's inquest, but I have been unable to find any corner's records for Garrard County. The Kentucky laws of the time did not require the county corner to maintain any records! Therefore, as you might expect, very few such records are extant for any of the Kentucky counties. The vital statistics record includes a "Name of Parents" heading. For James Mayfield, this heading is filled out as "Unknown." This entry further reinforces the conjecture that James Mayfield was illegitimate.
