Searching scotlandspeople.gov.uk 30 Aug 2003, I could find only one Helen Matheson (soundex) born to a James 1756-1777: 11 Mar 1764 in Prestonpans to James Matheison & Isabel Atchison GROS 718/00/0005.

In Innerleithen, there is a family of James Mathison & Bessie Lauder (married 8 Aug 1756) that fits chronologically and onomastically (Helen's first daughter is named Betty):

Margaret Mathason 7 Dec 1757 Christian Mathieson 3 Nov 1759 James Matheson 1 Feb 1761 Christian Matheson again 6 Feb 1763 and no more.

On familysearch.org, Robin found the following additional children for this family:

(she did not find the second Christian) John Jul 1765 Helen 29 Aug 1767 Peter Mar/Apr 1770 Elizabeth 9 May 1773 Janet Oct/Nov 1777.
