James Martin was baptised on 23rd June 1823 at Luton in Bedfordshire, son of Charles and Elizabeth Martin. The 1841 census finds James working as a labourer and living with his parents and siblings in Back Street, in the High Town area of Luton.
In 1843, aged 20, James married Eliza Marshall, who had a three year old daughter. They settled in the High Town area after their marriage, and appear to have had a further ten children together between 1844 and 1865, although one died young. James worked as a bricklayer.
James died in 1872, aged 48. Eliza survived him by nine years.
