James Mardell was baptised on 26th February 1809 at King's Walden in Hertfordshire, son of Thomas and Sarah Mardell.
James was married in 1830 at King's Walden to Maria Marshall, who had been born in the neighbouring parish of Kimpton, but had moved to King's Walden with her family as a child. James and Maria appear to have had at least nine children together between 1831 and 1854. The censuses from 1841 to 1861 each find the family living at Breachwood Green, the largest village in the parish of King's Walden, with James working as a bricklayer.
James died in 1862, aged 53. Maria survived him by nearly twelve years.

This would appear to be the most plausible baptism, being in the same parish which James consistently gave as his birthplace in the censuses as an adult, and at about the right time.
