James was born and educated in England. After coming to America, he was engaged in the Coal Mining business, for some time in Peoria County, IL. He later purchased a farm at 'Jones Prairie', which he soon sold and 'removed' to Oak Hill, Illinois, where he again invested in farm property. He came to Elmwood, IL. In1893, where he was one of the leading citizens, until his death July 15, 1897. He was a memberof Company 'C', 151 Regiment Volunteer Infantry, and served through the Civil War.
