DEEDS, LANCASTER COUNTY, VA: 1. 28 JAN 1798. John Connally and Mary his wife of Northumberland County, VA to James Hill. 35 acres of land adjacent to Southern James, said James Hill where he now lives, East side of main road leading from Davis' Warehouse [Merry Point area] to Lancaster Court House [Merry Point Road], "a little above James Gordan's line, JOHN HILL'S Lands. Part of tract "formerly belonging to Richard Stephens dec'd late of Lancaster County which descended to his eldest son William as heir at law" and who died without issue, and the land then descended to his three sisters to wit: Mary, Ann and Elizabeth. Mary being the "now wife" of said John Connally and this 35 acres having been set apart in the division alloted to John Connelly and Mary his wife in right of his wife Mary. Witnessed by Joseph Carter, Jr., William Yerby and John Lunsford. On margin "Original delivered to James Hill 12 July 1800." (DB 23:175). 2. 8 SEP 1805. James HIll and Nancy his [2nd] wife to John Lunsford, all of Lancaster, 33 acres bound by Job Carter, Peter Beane, Jeduthan James, on the road leading from Davis' warehouse to Lancaster Court House. Seems to be the same as the 35 acres above. TAX LISTS, LANCASTER COUNTY 1782-1849: 1782-1786 Not taxed 1787-1787 Taxed for 195 acres 1788-1805 Taxed for 100 acres. 1806 Taxed for 75 acres (the deeds above are not taxed, land transfer for 1806 says 25 acres sold to John Angel, no deed of record.) 1807-1816, James Hill estate taxed for 42 acres. The alterations to the 1807 tax list show a transfer of 33 acres to John Lunsford, per deed # above. 1817 and on. Not mentioned in tax lists ________________________ Will of James Hill, dated 9 MAY 1802, proved 16 DEC 1805. Will Book 28, p. 92. Names wife Nancy, daughter Nancy. Makes Joseph Carter, Jr. and John Lunsford executors. Witnessed by Jno. Miller, Sr., Edmond Brooke, Jeb Carter. (abstract by Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library, 1975). Order Book 22D, p. 100. 16 DEC 1805. Will proved, Joseph Carter, Jr. granted administration with John Lunsford his security. Order Book 22D, p. 447. 17 FEB 1808.
