The Longtown Drowning Case On Saturday Mr J B Lee deputy coroner held an inquest in the Scotch Arms Longtown on the body of James Harkness who was drowned while crossing the Esk on the evening of Friday 30th ult. Thomas Harkness, son of the deceased, deposed that his father was a circular sawyer and was 64 years of age. Alexander Wilkie, Longtown, said he met Mr Harkness at 6 pm Friday week close to the Metal Bridge. They sat for about an hour on the bank taking to Joseph Watson, the river watcher, and also to the father of the witness. They afterwards fished the Sheepwash for half an hour and then Harkness spoke of crossing. Witness was against wading because the water was heavy and he knew that he would have to carry his father across on his back, Harkness thought they could manage it. All the fishers crossed there, and both Harkness and his father had crossed frequently. When the river was heavy, as it was that night, they crossed in a slanting direction down the stream. As they prepared to cross, Harkness took witnesses rod and box so that he could carry his father. Harkness had entered the water a few yards when witness turned round and bent his back to take up his father. Witness when he raised himself missed Harkness and called ³Oh, Harkness is down the water². Witness did all he could to save the life of Harkness. There had been defamatory reports that there had been quarrelling . . . there was no quarrel and no loud words. Harkness and witness were great friends, they having known each other about twenty years . . . Verdict accidentally drowned. Carlisle Patriot, September 13th 1889
