Notes
- one of the most noted and successful merchants in Charleston
- stockholder of The Gaslight Co. and South Carolina Railroad Co.
- founder of Peoples National Bank, one of the first banks formed in Charleston under the National Banking Act
- lived in his grandfather John Gibbe's house on the SE corner of Meeting and George Streets ; Lafayette is said to have made a speech from the front steps in 1825
- founded and maintained a soldier's hospital at the Old Farmers Hotel during the Civil war
- left a large fortune when he died
- left a $100,000 trust to build The Gibbes Memorial Art Gallery, located at 136 Meeting Street
