On 24 June 1794, a deed was recorded in Prince George's County Deed Book JRM 3, on page 100. In the deed Ann Mary Gates (widow of James Gates transfer title to Henry Truman Compton. This indicates that James T Gates died prior to this date.

Orphan Records in Maryland, Probate Estate and Guardianship Files, 1796-1940 mentions James T Gates and wife Mary Ann Gates parents of Elisha and Elizabeth. The Orphan Records use the name James T Gates. The will of Peter Gates lists a son with the name James Truman Gates. The Truman name appears again with a great-grandchild of James T Gates.
