James Fensom was baptised on 20th February 1802 at Kimpton in Hertfordshire, son of Richard and Ann Fensom.

On 15th July 1822, aged 20, he married Maria Hornet who was from the neighbouring parish of Wheathampstead. Maria already had a daughter who was about three years old. James and Maria went on to have another six children together between 1822 and 1838. Their first child was baptised at Kimpton, when the family was living at Blackmore End. Some time between 1822 and 1826 they moved to the neighbouring hamlet of Gustardwood in Wheathampstead parish, and all the other children were baptised at Wheathampstead. They seem to have moved again between 1834 and 1838 from Gustardwood to Marshalls Heath, also in Wheathampstead parish.

The 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses each find James and Maria living together at Marshalls Heath. James worked as an agricultural labourer, whilst Maria was a plaiter.

James died in 1861, aged 59. He was buried at Wheathampstead on 16th May 1861. Maria survived him by about eight years.
