James Sebastian (Jimmy) Doyle was born on 13th June 1894 in the city of Dublin, son of a policeman named Thomas Doyle and his wife Bridget Cleary. When he was only three years old his mother died, shortly after giving birth to his brother John Maurice. Jimmy and his two surviving brothers went to live with their late mother's brother and sister, Thomas and Eliza Cleary, at Monasterevin in County Kildare.

Jimmy later moved to London, where he ran a sweet shop at 160 Tollington Park in the Finsbury Park area. His cousin Michael Reid and his family briefly lived there with him during World War II.

Jimmy died in 1954, aged 59.
