Facts and Events
He was a member of Company D, 1st Regiment, Georgia Reserve and was paroled at the close of the war at Macon, Georgia. James Asa Davis was a guard at the Andersonville Military Prison during the latter stages of the Civil War. This was the prison where thousands of Union soldiers died while prisoners of war. The Davis family farm was in the path of Sherman's march through Georgia. Their fruit trees were cut down by Union troops who also took their cattle. They knew Sherman's troops were coming so they buried all the food they could so they could survive. James Asa Davis didn't want any of his daughters to marry. After each one of them married, he took to bed and remained there for a while to mourn his loss. MARRIAGE LICENSE OF JAMES A. DAVIS AND SALLIE MCCURRY Marriage License. Georgia. Hart County.
