Rev. James Chiles, according to St. Peter's Parish Register, was born in New Kent Co. VA about 1702 [s/b 1720?], son of Henry Chiles and Margaret _______. He married Elizabeth Durrett of Spotsylvania County, date unknown. The will of John Durrett, written 30 July 1773 at Spotsylvania Co., mentions "daughter Elizabeth Chiles", her children Elizabeth, Harry, and James Chiles, and son-in-law James Chiles.
Virginia Lee Hutcheson Davis, in Tidewater Virginia Families, Vol. II, states that recent research has established that the James Chiles who married Elizabeth Durrett is the same Rev. James Chiles who was a Baptist minister and died in Ninety-Six District in 1784.
