James was born in Wilmington and, for the most part of his adult life, he carried on the running of The Flour Mills founded by his Father. He was one of the orignators of The Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad of which he was the Director. He was President of The Union National Bank. "He was large, somewhat corpulent man," and in his portrait, owned by Henry Seidel Canby, he wears a stock, "His silver hair peaks over his forehead, his eyes are not unkindly, but his chin and jaw are steel."
