James Brazier was baptised on 21st September 1851 at Great Wymondley in Hertfordshire, son of a straw plaiter called Mary Brazier, formerly Lake, and her husband George Brazier, an agricultural labourer. James appears in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses living with his parents and siblings in Great Wymondley.

On 24th November 1877, aged 26, James married Emma Worbey in the nearby town of Hitchin. At the time of their marriage they were both living at Charlton, a hamlet to the south-west of Hitchin. Emma already had two young children, and they went on to have a further four children between 1878 and 1886. The 1881 census finds the family living at Charlton, with James working as an agricultural labourer and Emma as a straw plaiter.

James died when he was only 36 years old in 1887, when his youngest child was just one year old. Emma survived him by over 36 years.
