My grandfather James Best told us that his father (James Best) was a Scotsman. James Best Snr died from the effects of Mustard gas after WW1. After her husband died Alice went back to Belturbet and ran a guest house, where my grandfather grew up. (They may have moved back to Ireland before James Best Snr died, though I am presuming they went after.)
