James Berry was baptised on 13th April 1755 at Barton in the Clay in Bedfordshire, son of Samuel and Ann Berry.

On 25th May 1775, aged 20, James married Elizabeth Bentman in the neighbouring parish of Hexton. They returned to Barton after their marriage, having four children baptised there between 1775 and 1784.

Elizabeth died in 1799, aged 42. James outlived her by sixteen years. He was buried at Barton on 22nd March 1815, aged about 60.
