Surnames:
There is a family story that James Bennett shot a man in San Saba area, killing him. He fled to Austin, local sherrif told family they knew Jim did it and was in Austin. Family took him a good horse and told him to get out of the country. He went to WY to his brothers via Colorado where he is supposed to have killed to Black Army troopers. The following is an excerpt from the family history of the Bennett family as told by Albert Armstrong Bennett about his great-uncle James Bennett the son of James & Margaret Bennett from San Saba, Tx.Albert A. Bennett said he saw the picture and newpaper article about the Glendive robbery in his Uncle Georges house at about 8 and later after his uncles dath. These were destroyed by his Aunt Lola to protect the family name. I am now trying to relocate copies. He would have been 30 in 1896. I have a homestead record in Glendo, Wyo next to George Bennett's place in 1905 and that is why I put hisdeath at abt. 1906.

James Bennett lived in Texas until he got into trouble. He was a hard case and into trouble wherever he went.
He shot and killed a guy off his horse in Texas and had to go to Austin to hide out. The sherriff of San Saba, Texas., Hugh Miller, a friend of the Bennett family came to Albert Bennett (brother of James) and told him the law knew Jim was hiding in Austin. Albert took a good horse to Jim in Austin and told him to quit the country or swing from a rope as the man he killed was a prominant individual. He went to Colorado and hired out to a hay contractor, putting up hay for the Army. He went to some Colorado town and got to drinking. There were some black Army troops there and he ended up killingtwo of them. That put him wanted by the Army and the government. He took off from there and hid out at (another brother) George's ranch. George tried to get him to give himself up but Jim left and went to Canada. He robbed a bank, with some gang, in Canada and got the Canadian Mounted Police after him. He left Canada and went thru Montana and spent some time in the Dakotas, hanging around the gold camps. Them he ended up back in Montana and robbed a bank in Webo, Montana. They then planned a bank robbery in Glendive, Montana. The law was apparently waiting for them in Glendive as they were all shot full of holes and killed. He went by the name of Jim Lacy when he was killed in Montana. He also went by the name of Clay at one time or other. After he was killed the law at Glendive sent George a picture of the corpse and asked for a positive identification. He made the identificaiton for Montana authorities and had Jim buried in Miles City, Mt. He paid for the burial. Around 1900-1906.
