Information from the presentments on the the Court Leet Rolls, (assuming it all refers to the same James Almond, -- the only plausible one in the parish registers):

James Almond was charged with assault in the 1630s. In 1657, there was a presentment against him for trading in the town on weekdays, not being a burgess. In 1658, there was a presentment against John Whittle for "abusing" James Almond. James Almond was a toll taker at Hallgate in 1658 and 1659 and a gatewaiter at Hallgate in 1661 and 1662. In 1670 there was a presentment made against him for "mechandizing in grossary", not being a freeman. In 1681, James Almond "did sell by false measures."

(There is a transcription of the Court Leet Rolls made available online at wiganworld.co.uk. The material was supplied by Wigan Heritage Services.)
