Facts and Events
"A Lamentable Tragedy" Jacob Wallach Accidentally killed while Hunting. A tragedy occurred on the Boonville road Sunday morning last that brought great sorrow to two estimable families and shrouded the entire community in gloom. It was one of those unfortunate occurrences that no forsight could have avoided. Jacob Wallach and his brother Charles left the home place, thirteen miles southwest of this city, early Sunday morning to visit their mountain claim, which is situated some distance from the ranch house. They took their rifles with them, and on their return saw a bear gliding through the underbrush. They both fired, and then, three another cartridge into their guns. As Charles Wallach was pulling back the lever of the Winchester his brother Jacob sprang forward, down the hill, and directly in range of his brother's gun. In closing the lever Charles' gun was prematurely exploded. The bullet entered the back of the deceased, on the left side, and came out on the right side near the nipple. Charles sprang to his brother's side to render whatever assistance was possible. It was decided to immediately seek medical aid, and Charles left afoot for home, only a few hundred yards distant, to call in help. When aid arrived Jacob Wallach was dead. Corner [sic] Taylor held an inquest on the body and a verdict was rendered in accordance with the above facts. The deceased was aged about twenty- eight years. He was a son of the well known pioneer, William Wallach and a son-in-law of J. D. Ball, another prominent settler of Anderson valley. He was a highly respected young man, full of promise and leaves a devoted wife to mourn his untimely death. References
