Jacob was born to Adam Drorbach and Catherine Scheebler and was christened on June 15, 1766. He was four years old when his father died and he lived under the guardianship of his uncle's William and Nicholas. In 1779, Jacob was thirteen when uncle's William and Nicholas moved to Virginia and he was placed under the guardianship of George Sprenkle. In Virginia, the family surname became Trobaugh. In 1789, Jacob visited his uncles William and Nicholas Trobaugh in Augusta County, Virginia and there he wed Catherine Younger on July 7, 1789. He then went to Lincoln County, North Carolina, to be near his brother Adam. Later joining him were his cousins, uncle William's sons, Michael, William (II), and George. In North Carolina, Jacob and Catherine had:
