[edit] NotesThe cemetery at Workman's Creek sits on top of the mountain, and at the very top is an 8 foot monument dedicated to Jacob Stover and Sallie McGhee. There is a drawing of a pioneer man and woman on the monument and it reads: Dedicated to Jacob Stover ca 1767-1844 Sally McGhee ca 1776-1836 Married 3-16-1788 and their children are listed as: Jacob Jr., Obediah, Henry, John, Lewis, Francis, Abraham, Susan, Sampson, and Jubal. The following inscription is on the stone: "Who with great faith in God lwft their homeland in Franklin Co., VA and settled here on Coal River at the mouth of Lick Run about 1815, and by word and deed set an example for their descendants to follow. We their many descendants are forever grateful to these, true pioneers for the courage they showed and the hardships they faced. It is to these grandparents of us all that we give our greatest honor and our deepest respet" Dedicated 5-29-1994 Marriage Bonds: Stover, Abraham and Matilda Kingery, May 13, 1834. Sur. Joel Starkey. Minister John Bowman Stover, Henry and Ann Starkey, Apr 8, 1822. Sur Jesse Starkey Stover, Jacob and Sallie McGhee, Mar 16, `788 Sur. Holdin McGhee
From: "Gracie Stover" <ggracie@@cox.net> Subject: Abraham/Jacob and Jeremiah Stover Date: Wed, 28 May 2003 14:54:08 -0500 References: <BAFA0764.84D%emmich@@bendcable.com> This Stover line is very confusing. As Naomi says, Abraham is listed as a minor child of Jacob in early estate records, so there definitely was an Abraham, but I am not sure where he went, What happened to him, or who his children were. As for Jeremiah, I have seen him also as a son of Jacob Jr, but I am not convinced it has been proven who his parents actually were. I would love to be able to find that out though. I have some Stover info posted at my webstie at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ggracie/library/stover/sindex.html I do beleive that the Raleigh Co Jacob Stover is connected to Jeremiah for the following reasons. 1. According to early Raleigh Co historians, Jacob had a son named Obediah who md Massea Stanley in Franklin Co. Unfortunately these historians mostly relied on interviews with elder family members because of the shortage of early records in the Raleigh Co area. The name Obediah is not a common name for Stovers and it does seem to run in Jeremiah's line as well as in Jacob's line. 2. From Old Virginia Court Records: Being a Transcript of the Records of the First Court of FRANKLIN COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1786-1789 By MARSHALL WINGFIELD PAGE TWO HUNDRED SIXTY-FIVE [page 141-2 in above book] August Court 1788-Stover vs Davis a Jury Sworn, to Wit, James McVey, George Ashberry, Ed'd Choat, Robert Mason, John Kyle, David Barton, Jubal Early, Thomas Jones, Robert Johns, Samuel Kerby, John Bates & Lewis Davis. Ver. Return for Plf. & O. R. On the Motion of Jonathan Davis it is ordered that Meshack Hodges & William Dillingham be fined According to Law for not Attndg as Witness fo S'd Davis Ads Stoner. Holden McGee is allow'd 2 Days Attce & 1 Cumming and returning 20 miles as a Witness for Stover vs Davis. Jeremiah Stover is allow'd 2 Days a Wits for same I beleive this is strong circumstantial of a link between the Raleigh Co Jacob Stover and Jeremiah and Holden McGee. Holden McGee was the surety on the marraige bond of Jacob Stover and Sallie McGee, so we assume he was her father, but he could have been an uncle or her grandfather with the age difference. But, I do not know the relationship between Jeremiah and the Raleigh Co Jacob Stover. References
