Facts and Events
1. At Skatelöv Parish from about 1895 his cottage is recorded as being on the lands of Torp (croft) Hjerton- and Storegård. 2. Contrary to the common practice in Sweden before 1900 of using a person's father's first name as a surname, the name Hallberg extends back several generations before Jöns. In response to a question regarding this practice, the Swedish genealogist Elisabeth Thorsell (e-mail dated 30 June 2003) commented as follows: "Well, the Hallbergs came from a line of masons, and as craftsmen they felt they belonged to slightly more elevated social class than the mere farmers, and they often started to use family surnames as (did) the townspeople and the upper classes. 3. Regarding the inconsistent use of the surname Hallberg in the early generations, Ms. Thorsell further commented: " if somebody went back to farming, they might not have used that name, but knew of it, and when someone in the next generation wanted a family surname, it was mostly the old name that they re-used". I do not know if Jöns' brother Pål also used the Hallberg name later on in life, but he was probably still a Pålsson, when he emigrated to Denmark in 1871. The other brothers died too young to use any surnames."
