About Irwin Schulman

Irwin Samuel Schulman was born 12 September 1902 in Minsk, Russia. Irwin petitioned to become an American citizen in 1937, and was granted citizenship the following year in 1938.

Irwin was an entrenreneur and was known as an early pioneer of Palm Springs, in establishing "The Chi Chi Club" in Palm Springs in the 1940's and 1950's as "a hip little place to come for wealthy people". Irwin had many friends and connections, including the normally reclusive Howard Hughes, a frequent Chi Chi guest. The Chi Chi Club also attracted notable Mafioso, such as Sam Giancana and Mickey Cohen. After being "the place to be seen" in Palm Springs for many years, the club eventually closed in 1954.

Towards the end of Irwin's running of The Chi Chi Club, he joined up with his brother Mark Schulman in building the Palm Springs Riviera Hotel, which opened for business in 1958. The Riviera Hotel became a popular vacation spot for many in the Southern California area, was also a hang-out for the "Rat Pack" and frequently featured popular stars such as Elvis Presley, Desi Arnaz and others.
