Hugo Grotius was born in Delft, one of the most important cities of Holland in the 16th century. He grew up in the middle of the influential families of Delft. Hugo, a prodigious boy, started his studies in Leiden at only 11 years of age. Being a prodigy he was invited to join Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, Land's Advocate of Holland and Raadspensionaris ('Prime Minister') for the States of Holland, to visit Henry IV of France to gain more support in the war against Spain. During this official visit Hugo managed to make his Dr.iur at the University of Orléans.

He started 1600 as advocate in 's-Gravenhage and in 1607 started his public career as Advocate-General of the Fisc of Holland, Zeeland and Friesland.
