Military Service

Hugh E. Linn was drafted into a Pennsylvania regiment and served nine months in the Civil War, 171st Pennsylvania Infantry (Drafted Militia) Regiment, Company I.S2 [The biography for Jesse Fletcher Means (husband of Hugh’s eldest daughter Jennie) stated Hugh had volunteered and served eighteen monthsS6, however the record shows he was instead drafted, and served nine. One source lists Hugh’s company as E, when in fact the company is I.S2 He was mustered in 2 Nov 1862 and mustered out with his company on 8 Aug 1863.

Hugh and (after his death) widow Catherine applied for and evidently received pensions. The Pension Index card lists him as "Hugh Lynn," 171st PA Infantry. The widow is listed as "Catharine R. Lynn." Soldier's pension number: 496929. Widow's pension number: 342116.
