Research notes

  • Hugh may have been the son of an earlier wife of William Lambert, since he appears to have been 10 years older than the next known child. Online speculation gives a potential mother as "Ann Searle" of Richmond county, VA. More research needed.

    Will abstract of Hugh Lambert
    18 Nov 1764
    - To my wife, I lend to her for life the use of my Negroes Jacob, Solomon, Jenny & Agg, and also my livestock and household furniture.
    - To my son William I leave Negroes Jacob & Cate, but my wife is to have use of Jacob during her life.
    - To my daughter Anne Hammock, I lend to her for life after my wife’s death the use of my Negro Solomon.
    - To my grandson Hugh Hammock, I leave my Negro Solomon after the deaths of my wife & daughter.
    - To my daughter Mildred Hammock, I leave 200 acres where she now lives by the bound "already made to her.” Also during her and her husband’s lives, Negro girl Suck & at their deaths Suck & her increase to be divided between the heirs of my sd daughter.
    - To my son Lewis, I leave 250 acres on the north side of his spring branch, joining Mildred Hammock. Also Old Jenny & Agg at my wife’s death.
    - To my daughter Lorana Kirke, I leave 150 acres which is the remainder of my land on Crooked Run.
    - To James Kirke & his wife, I lend to them Negro girl Pat & at their deaths said Pat & her increase to be divided between the heirs of my daughter Lorana Kirke.
    - To my son Richard, I lend to him for life & to his wife for life or widowhood, Negroes Frank & Young Nan, & at her death or marriage I give the said Negroes & their increase to the heirs of my son Richard.
    - To my son Hugh, at my wife’s death, I give him Negroes Hannah & Ned.
    - To my grandson Robert Hammock, I give one child Frank.
    - My Negro woman Old Nan may choose either of my children to live with "but if neither of my Children will maintain her for her Labor my Desire is she be maintained by all my Children.”
    - To my son Thomas, the land & plantation where I now live, & Negroes James, Prince & Little Janny, all my stock at my wife’s death, all my household furniture.
    - All my children will bear an equal part in paying £11 to Lewis Lambert "and he to bear a part with the rest.”
