Burgess, Howard - Howard 'Hap' Burgess, 88, of Port Gibson, died Saturday, June 16, 2001 at Newark Manor Nursing Home. 'Hap' spent most of his life living in Port Gibson and was a devoted member of the Port Gibson Volunteer Fire Department. He was proud of his leadership in bringing municipal water to the Port Gibson community. Newark residents remember his 35 years at Bloomer Brothers, and his active role in the Newark Elks Lodge. Interment in Port Gibson Cemetery. Hap was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Garlock Burgess, and son, Gary Burgess. He is survived by two sons, Daniel of Ocala, Florida and Ronald of Bozeman, Montana; sisters Mary Thompson and Kate Jones, both of Newark; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
